Accolades for Our North High Marching Band - 20th Year in State Anzac Parade

Marching Band, State Anzac Parade 2014
North High Marching Band, State Anzac Parade 2014

For the twentieth year in succession, our Mackay North State High Marching Band was honoured with an invitation to the State Anzac Parade, which is a source of great pride for the members and staff of the band as well as the whole of the school community. Rehearsals began in late January for the new members of the band and continued up until the band left for Brisbane just before the parade. The drum corps, the mallet percussion instruments, the brass/woodwind instruments, the flags and the drum major all had separate rehearsals and then blended together in the full rehearsals.

This year, we were able to take 84 students with us on the coaches, but were delighted to welcome six other students in Brisbane who made their own way there. We were again the only band invited to march the route three times and our students demonstrated great resilience and tenacity in very warm conditions in Brisbane. The State Governor, Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO, was very generous in her praise of the band each time we passed the saluting dais and the spectators in Brisbane were very enthusiastic in cheering us on. It was also very exciting to have so many parents and staff in Brisbane watching us – sincere thanks for your support.

The school has received many congratulatory messages from all around the state – some from our past students as well.

Planning is already almost complete for the 2015 trip as we have been invited again for the twenty-first time! The parade next year will be the biggest yet as it is the Gallipoli centenary and the state committee have big plans! The trip will leave on Wednesday night, April 22 and return on the Monday public holiday (April 27) at about 7.00am.

Many thanks to our long standing, passionate marching band staff team – David Bayliss, Judy Power, Anne and Joe Clutterbuck, Simon Henderson and Kathy George.
