Open Boys Cricket team played Mirani SHS
MNSHS Open Boys Cricket Team playes Mirani SHS
Last Friday our Open Boys Cricket team played Mirani SHS in the regional final of the Australia Post knockout competition at Harrup Park. This game followed the boys’ comfortable victory over Bowen SHS side in Term Two.
Winning the toss and batting first in a 40 over-a-side game, Jack Sambell and Mitchell English got the side off to a quick start, racing to 50 off the first 8 overs. Some tight bowling from the Mirani boys saw a couple of quick wickets fall.
When Joel Bruun joined an inform Jack at the crease the scoring rate really picked up. Jack brought up his 100 just after the drinks break – in the 21st over with the total on 149.
Having reached this personal milestone, Jack continued to accelerate his scoring and when he was eventually dismissed in the 33rd over for a brilliant 204 runs the game was as good as won.
The last 6 overs saw many wickets fall in the pursuit of quick runs, with Joel losing his wicket for a very well compiled 75 runs. With the innings closing at 8 for 355 off their 40 overs the boys were confident going to lunch.
The Mirani innings started slowly and, with wickets falling at regular intervals, they were never really going to threaten such a large total. With good line and length bowling from Josh Del Simone, Alistair Houghton and Steve McGiffin, supported by some exceptional
fielding, the Mirani side were dismissed for just 50 runs in the 12th over.
Special mention needs to be of Jack Sambell’s achievement of 204 runs. This is the highest score by made by any player in an open schoolboys’ game for Mackay North SHS and the second highest score ever by a North High student.
Congratulations to all the boys in the cricket squad and good luck in the next round against the rockhampton regional winner.
