“Wonderful band…. Thank you so much for coming”

(Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AC – Governor of Queensland)

This was the reaction of the Governor of Queensland as our marching band passed
the saluting dais at the State Anzac Parade in Brisbane last week. This was the eighteenth time that our marching band had been honoured with an invitation to the State Parade and we were the only band requested by the state organising committee to march the route three times.

Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of the Brisbane CBD and all along
the way the crowds applauded and loudly expressed their gratitude and congratulations.
The ninety-six students in the band did a fantastic job and brought great credit not only to
themselves, but also to their families, our school and Mackay. It was heart-warming to see
the veterans chatting with our students, relating their stories, as we all patiently waited for
the chief marshal’s signals.

The months of intensive rehearsals certainly paid off! Congratulations to all members
of the band – not only for the excellence of your performances, but also for your exemplary behaviour and polished presentation throughout the whole trip. Special congratulations must go to this year’s drum major, Year 12 student, Rachel Van Der Veen, who excelled in her role and received much deserved praise for her efforts. Sincere thanks to all the staff who accompanied the band on this outstandingly successful trip – David Bayliss, Judy Power, Simon Henderson, Anne Clutterbuck, Joe Clutterbuck and Kathy George.

Perhaps the value of the trip is best summed up by some of the students involved:
Kristen Rasmussen (Year 12) – As a participant in the last five State Anzac Parade
trips, I must say, they were the highlight of my years at North. They have left me with great memories to remember into the future.

Alicia Eden (Year 12) – Each year I look forward to the State Anzac March – it is
such an honour to be invited and the whole trip is amazing.

Rachel Van Der Veen (Year 12) – It’s a great honour to be invited to the Brisbane
parade and the trip is always a wonderful experience. As well as the excitement of the
march, it brings students from all year levels together.

Tyler Kilsby-O’Dea (Year 12) – The marching band trips are the best! They have
been the highlight of my whole school experience.
